Review:This was definitely an enjoyable contemporary suspense YA. I haven’t really read many of its kind, but I will be more likely to pick up one after reading this.
The story is about Ren, an English teenager coming to spend her summer in the US, surrounded by American rich families to be the nanny to their children. She also befriends a group of prep school kids and ordinary locals, the latter led by the oh so misunderstood and scrumptious bad boy Jesse. Which side would I choose? Well, it’s too obvious – Jesse wins, always, no competition what so ever. And then, someone starts killing nannies and other mayhem, dirty secrets and double crossing starts coming about. Luckily, there is Jesse to save my day and be the sunshine for me when reading.
This book had a bunch of pros suspense story wise: tension, mystery, close calls, figuring out the villain, action, fistfights, etc. It also excelled in romance: can I just say that Jesse was über swoon worthy? Well, he was also a nice guy, broody, but nice. He and Ren were quite realistic together and they had heaps of chemistry even before becoming a couple, plus, no insta love. But, despite that, the other love line I absolutely hated, because, let’s face it, love triangles are the bane of my YA reading existence and while I understood its necessity I wasn’t happy, not one bit.
Always a pro: this is a standalone, as much as I’d like to see Jesse again, it’s much more satisfying to have a decent end, not wait till things are stretched thin during the span of several years. This story worked well for a single book.
My main issue was that the story took a while to get going and to the point. The first half of the book was kind of slow and felt like a needlessly long delay, the second part, however, flew by due to the plot picking up and things starting to happen. So all in all, everything balanced out somewhat. Also, the villain and his reasoning kind of fell flat to me, but, luckily, the relationships Ren managed to form took center stage, so I wasn’t too hung up on that.
Characters:
Ren was a decent and likable heroine, I wasn’t wild about her, but she didn’t do anything to make me absolutely dislike her either. She made mistakes, was obviously a bad judge of character (I forgive her though), was careless with her own safety, but, still, I liked her, she just came across authentic. I felt that she was being completely herself and that is something to respect, even though, I didn’t agree with several of her decisions and action.
Jesse – well, what haven’t I already said that doesn’t make him seem like anything less than the awesome, swoony, irresistible guy that he was? He was all that and more. There was just something not really charming (he was too broody for charming), but compelling about him that made him very attractive. He was also a nice guy underneath all that hostile misunderstood-ness and a really protective guy who would do anything for the people he cares about, including sacrificing himself. And if that aint awesome then I don’t know what is.
Overall:
The suspense part was decent, but the people and relationships took center stage for this quite enjoyable contemporary YA. The heroine was relatable and nice, but the hero was beyond hunky, mysterious and such a fan girl’s dream guy. I recommend to all who’d like to get their hands on a quick, easy and readable contemporary YA (with a great hero to boot).

It was amazing!!!!!! Young readers would love this book! !!!!! There's so many twists and turns! Couldn't put it down!!!!!!!!!
I loved this book, it had a great plot, and it kept me reading till the end. I would recommend this book for 14 and up.
Yet another epic read from Sarah Alderson, another totally swoon worthy guy. Jesse Miller has just earned a prominent place on my book crush list.
I don't really know if I can give it higher praise than just demanding everyone go read it for themselves along with all of Sarah's other books. Read it now!
Also "Tormenting Lila" has some fun sneak peaks if you have also read the Lila books!!
Sarah Alderson's "The Sound" is a pretty run-of-the-mill, YA romance there's a hot boy who's kind of a jerk, but OMG NO. JOKES. NOT REALLY. He smirks. The protagonist reads books, loves music and is a blogger! She's hot, but she totally doesn't think so because she's... curvy. And we meet them by way of simple, occasionally witty prose peppered with pop culture references.
Basically, girl spends summer away from home, girl falls in love with boy or boys, girl is almost murdered. Something like that.
Here's where the story got away from itself
- The thriller portion of this romance thriller is highly predictable and comes in the form of several balls being juggled. There's a rapist AND a serial killer to worry about, and you've got to wonder about our girl's odds.
- The MC makes some questionable choices, all because of said hot boy and his rippling muscles.
- There is some undercover slut shaming built into the story. Whenever the MC thinks about wanting to have sex with the attractive male she's spent a few weeks getting to know, it's followed by thoughts like, "I'm such a skank!" and "what is wrong with me???" Nothing, girl. Nothing.
- The story dragged on for longer than what the plot called for.
- The supporting characters bleed together, so that I never knew which preppie boy was which and which nasty girl was which. In the end, it didn't matter much to the plot anyways.
Despite its weakness, it was still an entertaining read. Nothing amazing to see here, but go for it if you are a YA/NA romance junkie, and have a day to knock out a book. If not, well, I'm sure you'll find something else to fill up your time.
Breaking away from Hunting Lila, Sarah has delivered to us another action packed story with The Sound.
No wishy washy characters or plot lines here! 17yo Ren is off to Nantucket to nanny for a wealthy family. I doubt Ren thought this sleepy holiday island could send her world into a tailspin that she might not get out of alive! Ren has a typical nanny/parents relationship with her employers and the two young kids open her eyes to many things!
To the powers that be....I thank you! I thank you for giving Sarah Alderson the talent of writing HOT characters! And in The Sound, Sarah has blessed us with Jesse (*sigh*) ! He's bad, broody and bloody hot! He's also very misunderstood and the victim of hate from the local rich kids and their parents who'd like nothing more than to close his family's shop and own the prime piece of real estate it sits on. You will be amazed as to what lengths they are prepared to go to.....and murder is on that list.
But who could possibly be involved in the so-called serial killings happening on the island? Ren is about to find as she finds herself in the very predicament that gets people killed around Nantucket!
The Sound was enjoyable from start to finish. The pace, the action, the romance, the suspense - they all add up to the makings of what is a great read..but what I feel could also be a great movie!
